Hysterectomy is not done for the following reasons:

Hysterectomy cannot prevent cancer. The risks associated with the surgery are greater than the risks of getting cancer. Anyone that is at risk for developing uterine cancer should discuss this with her physician.

Hysterectomy is not done to prevent pregnancy. There are many methods of birth control that are safe and effective.

Hysterectomy May Not Always Be the Best Treatment

Hysterectomy may not always be the best treatment. You should discuss your options with your physician.

Some of the reasons hysterectomy may not be the best treatment are:

Uterine Bleeding - Bleeding can be treated with other methods, such as taking hormones or removing the uterine lining.

Weak Pelvic Muscles - Weak pelvic muscles can sometimes be successfully treated by taking hormones, doing pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises) or using vaginal weights placed inside the vagina to help strengthen the pelvic muscles.

Abdominal Pain without a definite cause - Having a hysterectomy for this type of pain may not get rid of the pain. It could even make the pain worse. It is important to find out the cause of the pain before consenting to any type of surgery or other treatment options.
