Before
Hysterectomy
Sometime in the weeks prior to your
surgery you will have a Pre-Op appointment with your surgeon. At
which time:
- Your doctor will do a physical exam and a complete
medical history.
- He/She should explain the way the surgery will be
preformed, whether it will be abdominal or vaginal.
- He/She should explain the risks involved and the
expected outcome of your surgery.
- He/She should discuss whether they will be
removing tubes & ovaries as well.
- You will have to sign a consent form for surgery
- You will receive written instructions on what to
do prior to surgery

The Written Instructions can vary from
doctor to doctor and also on the type of surgery that you will be having
and the reason you are having the hysterectomy.
In General, before a hysterectomy, you
may need to:
- Give yourself an enema or take a laxative to clean
out your bowels
- You may need to be on a clear liquid diet for a
couple days leading up to surgery
- Take a sleeping pill the night before surgery
- Take a shower the morning of surgery with a
special soap that kills bacteria on your skin
- Not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours and
up to 24 hours prior to surgery
- Stop taking over the counter drugs (i.e.
ibuprofen) and vitamins up to 2 weeks prior to surgery (discuss
this with your doctor because taking high amounts of vitamins (such as
Vitamin E) may cause harm. So talk to your doctor about this to
determine what can be taken safely and about the risks and benefits of
taking certain vitamins prior to surgery).
